I am in an ongoing exploration of creating uplifting art in conjunction with natures influence.
What began as an abstract concept merging artist and nature in a new expressive language, each maintaining its unique voice, has evolved into a profound experience. Lying beneath a paint-soaked canvas in my studio, I discovered a serenity that encapsulated the culmination of this artistic exploration.
“Rain”, with each passing day’s sway,
Tears on my cheek find their way,
From laughter’s light to sadness’ gray,
In nature’s ever-changing play.
Think of yourself lying in the grass on a summer day looking up watching clouds form and dancing about the sky, while at that very moment you find yourself without a care in the world. This is the exact sensation experienced as I lay in anticipation below my suspended easel after having poured the paint above onto the backside of the canvas. A front row view to witness clouds of color start to develop and form their amazing shapes as paint meets and blends to travel where it will. Eventually tributaries of color emerge, saturating and piercing through sections of canvas like a vibrant sun shower. It is at this point I yield to nature as gravity takes the lead to perform its part of the painting, pulling through what paint it will while leaving its amazing expressive footprint.
Fully immersed in the present moment and the energy that surrounds me, I work from a heightened awareness enabling me to observe evolvements with a broader, more encompassing perspective. I step out of automatic thinking patterns to embrace curiosity and openness; transcended to a clear insight of thoughts and emotions. This liberated perspective enables me to explore potential interactions within the emerging composition. Thus, a dialog between the artist, the canvas, and the natural world.
As I observe the developing composition, my mind remains clear and connected to the energy of this painting. Often, I find the composition has nothing more to say and the painting is complete. Sometimes I have a compelling sense of being asked to respond. I’ll reach up and push my fingers into the canvas, creating tension breaks where flow seeks a way through. Much like the gardener pruning to let sun and rain in to stimulate growth. This idea originated from a childhood camping trip during a rainstorm in an old canvas tent. I discovered water dripped through where I touched, leading me to experiment with creating shapes. Today the rain is low viscosity acrylic paints, while the tent becomes the artwork.
This art is as much about the sunny days as it is about the dreary days. Introspective works that stimulate a spectrum of contemplative moments.
Just as a folk singer weaves words and music to inspire change, these creations of shapes and colors beckon the mind to wander, explore and become enlightened.
Engage these atmospheric compositions of layers of color and dynamic expression as if you were strolling through a meditative garden, where you revel in the union of humanity and nature.
