In my studio, I am driven by a passion for exploring cultural heritage, especially Indigenous traditions, reintroducing lost authenticity to nurture community, connection, and a healthy relationship with nature for future generations disconnected from these historical narratives. Through a lens of minimalism and humility, I create pieces that strip away excess and celebrate the beauty in simplicity, inviting reflection on our shared humanity and the values that can connect us rather than divide us.
What began as an abstract concept, merging the artist and nature into a new expressive language, has evolved into a profound experience where each retains its unique voice. Beneath the paint-soaked canvas, I discovered a serenity that encapsulates the culmination of this artistic exploration.
Think of yourself lying in a sun-drenched meadow looking up watching clouds form and dancing about the sky, while at that very moment you find yourself without a care in the world. This is the exact sensation experienced as I lay in anticipation below my suspended easel after having poured the paint above onto the backside of the canvas. A front row view to witness clouds of color start to develop and form their amazing shapes as paint meets and blends to travel where it will. Eventually tributaries of color emerge, saturating and piercing through sections of canvas like a vibrant sun shower. It is at this point I yield to nature as gravity takes the lead to perform its part of the painting, pulling through what paint it will while leaving its amazing expressive footprint.
Fully immersed in the present, I approach my creative process with heightened awareness, embracing curiosity and openness. This mindset transcends automatic thinking, fostering a dialogue between myself, the canvas, and the natural world. As the composition unfolds, I instinctively sense when the painting is complete or feel compelled to respond—by pressing my fingers into the canvas to create tension breaks that aid the flow of paint. This instinctive action draws from a childhood camping trip, when I discovered that rainwater would drip through the canvas tent where I touched, leaving marks as I ran my fingers across the surface, tracing its unpredictable path. Just as I followed the rainwater’s course, I now allow nature’s spontaneity to complete the painting, revealing moments of surprise that constantly amaze me. Low-viscosity paints, like the rainwater, become a vibrant testament to the harmonious interplay between art and nature. By letting my creative process unfold naturally, I embrace life’s unpredictability, reminding myself that true perfection lies not in flawlessness, but in accepting the path that nature carves and the beauty it reveals.
“Rain”, with each passing day’s sway,
Tears on my cheek find their way,
From laughter’s light to sadness’ gray,
In nature’s ever-changing play.
